1:  IMMINENT SONIC DESTRUCTION - Triumphia

Selected by:  Andy Read
Country:  USA
Sub-genre:  Heavy prog

Description:  Four years in the making, this Detroit-based outfit offers its first concept album featuring seven new songs, including the 22-minute epic Arborous Calm, and a tale about a man and a woman overcoming all obstacles to find each other and create a new life. It is a clever blend of older prog styles, with the more modern influences of Devin Townsend, Pain of Salvation and Kingcrow. Less metallic than their 2010 debut (Recurring Themes), and with waves of vocal harmonies and clear melodic themes, this effort should bring the band a much wider audience.

2:   CIRRUS BAY - Places Unseen

Selected by:  Peter Funke
Country:  USA
Sub-genre:  Progressive Rock

Description: Old school prog in the best sense is served up by Cirrus Bay from the USA. The keyboards build up the tracks, bass and drums undertake a tactful accompaniment, and the vocals and guitars tell you the stories. The title track opens with fine rhythmic piano and the sweet voice of Tai Shan, and shows direction with it's vivid character. Though each flute or Mellotron reminds you of some of those elder bands, Cirrus Bay convinces with its own character and sound. The tracks have a lot of ideas, some interesting breaks and fine melodies. Very enjoyable.

3:   FACTOR BURZACO - 3.76

Selected by:  Raffaella Berry
Country:  Argentina
Sub-genre:  Avant-prog/chamber rock

Description:  As its title implies, Buenos Aires ensemble Factor Burzaco’s latest album is not quite their fourth, as it contains new versions of compositions that appeared on their previous three albums. Led by pianist/composer Abel Gilbert, the band unfold their distinctive brand of classical-inflected chamber rock, at the same time serious and whimsical. Carolina Restuccia’s unique vocal style is a strong focal point, for music that marries the rigorous RIO/Avant aesthetics with a warm South American vibe.

4:  PROGGER - Scattering

Selected by:  André de Boer
Country:  USA
Sub-genre:  Jazz fusion rock

Description: Combining styles, melodies, band members and cities into something vibrant and renewing; that is what Progger does best. Scattering is his third album to be exact, released about four months ago, and while listening you can easily tell that two Snarky Puppy musicians have added their craftsmanship to it. Nate Werth (percussions) and Justin Stanton on keys help to facilitate the groovy and funky atmosphere. And having witnessed Justin Stanton play Snarky Puppy last year live on both keys and trumpet, I can tell. Try the tracks Endorphin and Werewolf first.

5:   DEVIN TOWNSENDPROJECT - Transcendence

Selected by:  Andy Read
Country:  Canada
Sub-genre:  Progressive metal

Description: Transcendence is the seventeenth studio album by Canadian musician Devin Townsend, and the seventh album in the Devin Townsend Project series. Continuing his charismatically-eclectic approach to songwriting whenever he uses the DTP banner, this album is probably closest to Epicloud in its textures, yet with plenty of variety; from the quirky pop sensibilities of Offer Your Light, to the theatrical gothic riffage of Failure.
