1:  BAROCK PROJECT - Skyline

Selected by: Andy Read (France)
Country:  Italy
Sub-genre:  Progressive rock

Description:  This is an essential album for those who enjoy their classic symphonic progressive rock to be delivered with a healthy helping of theatrics and variety. Skyline is simply oozing with talent, helped by the impressive vocals of Vittorio De Scalzi (leader and founder of New Trolls). This is their fourth album and you may not have heard of them before, but trust me, give this a try and it'll shoot straight into your Top 10 albums of the year list.

2:   OLE LUKKOYE - Dyatli

Selected by: Raffaella Berry (Italy/USA)
Country:  Russia
Sub-genre:   Ethno/Trance/PsychedelicProg

DescriptionFounded in 1989 by multi-instrumentalist/composer Boris Bardash, St Petersburg-based outfit Ole Lukkoye are veterans of the Russian progressive music scene. Dyatli (Woodpeckers), their eighth studio album, offers a heady trip through some trance-inducing, psychedelic soundscapes. Seamlessly blending electronics with ethnic instruments, the music is exotic and deeply mesmerising. An Eastern European  version of Ozric Tentacles, driven by tribal beats and vocalist Ness Yanushkovskaya’s hypnotic chanting, inspired by Russia’s age-old shamanistic traditions.

3:   LO' THERE DO I SEE MY BROTHER - Northern Shore

Selected byAndré de Boer (The Netherlands)
Country USA
Sub-genre:  Post rock

Description:  This is how I like my post rock. Melodic, a tad slow at times, a wee heavy every now and then and wonderful to listen to until the late hours. This is the second album from this Washington-based band, with an odd name. Sanctifying, non-complex and so immensely addictive, that it holds your breath until the end of each song. Listen now and be amazed.

4:  ANTHROPIA - Non-euclidean Spaces

Selected by: Andy Read (France)
Country:  Italy
Sub-genre:  Prog/Power metal concept album

Description: This is a concept album about Cthulhu Mythos and H.P. Lovecraft's writings, featuring Arjen Anthony Lucassen (Ayreon et al) and Edu Falaschi (ex-Angra, Almah). Although rooted in in the symphonic prog/power metal styling, excellent male and female vocals, some great hooks and a broad mix of styles keep the grooves varied and interesting. Start with Silver Twilight Lodge and if that tickles your fancy, the rest should follow.

5:  THE MOOD MANUAL - Authentic Tensegrity

Selected by: Roger Trenwith (UK)
Country:  USA
Sub-genre:  Hard rock/underground

Description: "Hard rock" and "Underground", eh? Not descriptions you'll have seen for a while I'm sure. Back in the day, before journos splintered metal and prog into far too many daft sub-genres, there were essentially three types of rock music: Heavy Metal (led by Black Sabbath) Hard Rock (led by Deep Purple), and Underground (what became Prog Rock). This American band sounds like a modern amalgam of those three tropes, making their music sound ancient and up-to-date at the same time. Get the patchouli out!
